The Ulster Scots word for field is ‘fiel’. According to the Ulster-Scots Academy these fiels were often given names ranging from the personal to the practical; names like Corry’s fiel, or Old Jimmy Katie’s fiel through to ‘hen-house’ fiel to the ubiquitous ‘fitba’ fiel. The word ‘hill’ was the second largest group of fiel names recorded, meaning ‘fields on a slope’.
